Important Note: IPL Machines are NOT Laser Hair Removal

One of the greatest injustices in the cosmetic industry today is the confusion between IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) hair removal and laser hair removal. The uncertainty is understandable – after all, many people understand lasers to be little more than ‘Intense Light’. However, IPL hair removal is very, very different to laser hair removal! When investing in hair removal treatments we encourage you to do your research into the differences between one potentially harmful, and one effective and safe treatment.

How do IPLs work?

Intense Pulsed Light systems use a beam of traditional light of many different wavelengths to burn the hair shaft, hopefully damaging the follicle to prevent immediate re-growth of the shaft that was removed. The big word for it is photothermolysis – ‘light heat breakdown’.

How does laser hair removal work?

If IPLs work by photothermolysis, laser hair removal works by selective photothermolysis … and that single word makes a world of difference! You don’t want to cause ‘light heat breakdown’ in the cells of your skin, you want to selectively target the hair cells and follicles. The use of a particular wavelength of light in laser hair removal is what allows that selectivity, creating a heat injury to the hair, but not the surrounding skin.

How can I tell the difference between IPL and laser hair removal?

The easiest and most direct way to tell the difference between the two treatments is to ask the provider. You can also check for:

  • Mention of specific wavelengths of light (measured in nm) in the description of the service
  • Mention of types of machine including an Argon laser, Ruby laser, Alexandrite laser, Pulsed Diode Array, or an Nd:YAG laser indicate that you are purchasing true laser hair removal.
  • Pricing. IPL treatments are much cheaper than laser treatments, mostly because the equipment is far cheaper and have alot higher risk of side effects and unsatisfactory treatments results compared to laser. However any equipment in the wrong hands can be very dangerous with an inexperienced operator.

The Dangers of IPL

At best, IPL will create some reduction in hair growth in the long term. At worst, though, it causes severe burns, hypo-pigmentation, blistering and scarring. It’s a lesson that some people have to learn for the rest of their lives, unfortunately.

Many IPL injuries go unreported, with people feeling that they should have known better. It is very important to know the difference between laser and IPL before starting your treatments.

What machines do we use?

exqlaser14-p-laserThe CoolGlide Difference

CoolGlide systems are by far the more superior laser hair removal systems on the market for all skin tones, from light to dark, including tanned patients.

This unique design, longer wavelength and innovative cooling allows for extremely effective, safe and permanent results.

How do CoolGlide lasers compare with other hair removal methods?

Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all temporary methods which must be repeated on a frequent basis. The CoolGlide laser offers permanent hair reduction for lasting results.

exlaser-31Why choose CoolGlide lasers over other laser hair removal systems?

Using the latest technology in laser hair removal, CoolGlide laser systems can treat large areas without the limitations of older technologies.

The CoolGlide systems longer wavelength allows it to be used safely and effectively on patients with all skin types as well as tanned skin. Unlike other systems CoolGlide lasers can treat the fine hair on a woman’s upper lip just as easily and effectively as the coarse hair on a mans back. The cooled handpiece increases patient comfort and minimizes the adverse skin reactions commonly seen with other hair removal systems.

Preparation Guidelines

  1. For your consultation it is necessary for you to have one to two days growth so that the areas that require treatment are easily recognizable. However, prior to a treatment we ask that you shave the area the evening before or morning prior to your treatment. Should this be a difficult area to shave by yourself please advise when booking a treatment so that we can allow for time to shave the area for you.
  2. For hair removal on the face, please do not use (or make sure you wash off all) makeup prior to treatment.
  3. If you are currently on medication Accutane, Roaccutane or Gold Therapy or have been in the past 6 months, please let us know. This medication can make your skin more susceptible to damage from the laser.
  4. Generally, it is best to wait 4 - 8 weeks between treatments depending on what areas you are going to have treated. There is no advantage to rescheduling your visits closer together even if you do not see immediate results. The laser only targets hair in the growth phase. The next growth phase will be in 4 - 8 weeks.

What to expect after laser hair removal treatments

  1. Avoid bathing or washing with very hot water. Use tepid water. You may feel like you have a mild to moderate sunburn. Minor crusting or minor peeling of the surface layers of the skin is not unusual. Post treatment you are required to apply post laser gel twice daily. This assists with reducing redness and inflammation of the skin.
  2. Keep the area clean. Wash gently.
  3.  Avoid direct sun exposure after your treatment. If you do go in the sun, protect the treated area with a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher.
  4.  Do not shave the treated area for at least 4 days after a treatment. Do not wax, thread, pluck or bleach the hair that grows back. After laser treatment, hair may continue to grow out as if it were never even treated. Typically this will occur for about 2 weeks and then these hairs will simply begin to fall out.
  5. Avoid any irritating medications or chemicals, particularly on the face.
  6. Avoid exercise for 24 hours after your treatments.
